Community honors veterans and celebrates local heroes

During a recent government meeting, community leaders and representatives gathered to celebrate local achievements and recognize the contributions of various organizations and individuals in Martin County. Representative Toby Overdure opened the session, expressing gratitude for the service of attendees and highlighting the positive impact of the Air Force Junior ROTC programs at Jensen Beach and Martin County High Schools.

The meeting featured acknowledgments of local figures, including Ruth Ski Petruski, the Martin County tax collector, who received the Women Who Work Award from the Palm City Chamber of Commerce. The event also showcased the efforts of Pinewood Elementary fifth graders, who participated in a car wash fundraiser, and the community's support for local veterans.

City officials from Stuart, including City Manager Mike Mortel, were present to promote the free Sailfish Tram service, which facilitates transportation for residents and visitors in downtown Stuart. The meeting also honored the Women's Club of Stuart, which included World War II veterans, emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring those who served.

Additionally, representatives from the Garden Club of Stuart were recognized for their role in maintaining Memorial Park, while the Martin County Sheriff's Department, led by Sheriff William Snyder, received appreciation for their commitment to community safety. The meeting concluded with a reminder of the significant veteran population in Martin County, which includes over 11,000 individuals who served during wartime, underscoring the community's dedication to honoring its heroes.
