In a recent session at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, volunteers and staff engaged in a hands-on workshop focused on creating enriching toys for shelter cats. The event, sponsored by Ocean Breeze Resorts, aimed to enhance the well-being of cats awaiting adoption through creative crafts.
Participants learned to make various toys, including \"kickers\" from Care Bear socks, which are designed for cats to grab and kick, providing them with a playful outlet. The socks were filled with stuffing and infused with catnip or alternatives like valerian root and honeysuckle, catering to the preferences of different cats. Notably, it was highlighted that while 50-70% of cats respond to catnip, others enjoy different herbal options.
The workshop also featured the creation of noise-enrichment toys using ping pong balls filled with rice, which cats can bat around. Volunteers were encouraged to use household materials, such as fleece scraps and wooden rings, to make fleece rings that can be filled with herbs for added stimulation.
The initiative not only promotes the mental and physical health of the cats but also fosters community involvement, as participants were encouraged to take supplies home to create more toys and return them to the shelter. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of enrichment in animal care, aiming to reduce stress and increase the chances of adoption for the shelter's feline residents.
