Residents demand urgent action to curb reckless driving

Residents of Harlem voiced their concerns during a recent government meeting regarding escalating issues at the local recreation department, particularly at the old Clay Street facility. Community members reported alarming behaviors among youth, including drag racing, vandalism, and unsafe gatherings that have led to multiple accidents in the area.

One resident highlighted the dangers posed by vehicles running stop signs and speeding, particularly at the intersection of Elizabeth Road and Parkdale Drive. He noted that the absence of adequate speed limit signage contributes to the problem, urging local authorities to install clear markers to slow down traffic. He also mentioned that the city currently has only two officers on patrol, which he believes is insufficient to manage the safety concerns in a city of approximately 6,000 residents.

The discussion also touched on the need for physical barriers, such as gates, to deter traffic from congregating in the park area. Residents expressed frustration over the lack of response from city police when incidents occur, suggesting that a gate could significantly reduce the congregation of vehicles and associated disturbances.

Another resident echoed these sentiments, recounting experiences of vehicles performing burnouts and congregating in large numbers, often evading law enforcement. The community is seeking collaborative efforts between city and county officials to address these issues effectively.
