In a recent city council meeting, discussions centered around a contentious request from Cellcom to retract a $100,000 donation originally intended for the Bay Beach shoreline improvement project. The proposal, which was met with significant opposition, included a plan to replace the donation with a public Wi-Fi installation valued at the same amount, along with 50 months of free service.
Dave Charles, president of the Friends of Bay Beach, voiced strong objections to both the return of the funds and the Wi-Fi proposal. He argued that allowing Cellcom to withdraw its donation would set a dangerous precedent for future fundraising efforts, potentially jeopardizing ongoing projects that rely on community support. Charles emphasized the importance of maintaining financial commitments, especially given the existing $4 million debt associated with the park's development.
Cellcom's representative, Amick O'Malley, explained that the company’s initial donation was made in 2019 to support the restoration of the swimming beach, a project that has since evolved. He highlighted the need for a public Wi-Fi network at the park, which he argued would enhance visitor experience and align with the company's sustainability goals. O'Malley noted that the Wi-Fi initiative would not incur costs for the city for the first 50 months, as Cellcom would cover installation and service expenses.
Despite the arguments presented, Alder Eck, chair of the Parks Committee, expressed his disapproval of the request, advocating for a denial of both the return of funds and the Wi-Fi installation. He raised concerns about promoting phone usage in a family-oriented environment and reiterated the importance of sticking to the original project goals.
The council ultimately decided to deny Cellcom's request to retract the donation, ensuring that the funds remain allocated for the Bay Beach project, which is currently in its first phase of development. The decision reflects a commitment to uphold community fundraising efforts and maintain the integrity of financial contributions made to public projects.
