Community police program brings holiday cheer to families

During a recent government meeting, local officials discussed the upcoming \"Shop with a Cop\" event, scheduled for December 18, which aims to support families in need within the community. The initiative, led by Chief Bergall in collaboration with CF Pope Middle School, allows officers to engage with children through a day of shopping, breakfast, and activities, all funded by donations from local sponsors and cash contributions. The program relies heavily on school counselors to identify families who could benefit from the support, ensuring that assistance is directed where it is most needed.

In addition to the holiday event, the meeting also addressed the North Carolina School Board Association dues, which total $24,039 for the year. This amount includes $6,100 for web hosting of school policies, $16,319 for membership dues, and $1,500 for legal assistance. Officials highlighted the association's role in providing training, policy recommendations, and some legal support, particularly concerning liability issues.

The meeting concluded with a suggestion to promote the sheriff's office's similar initiatives, including a chocolate cap donation event on December 7, through local schools and social media to maximize community engagement.
