During a recent government meeting, members of the Rock Island Labor Day Parade committee gathered to celebrate the success of the 2024 parade and present awards to outstanding participants. Grace Shirk, a long-time member of the committee, expressed her gratitude for the community's support and highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the event possible.
This year’s parade featured 137 registered entries and 213 units, showcasing a vibrant display of community spirit. Shirk acknowledged the contributions of various city departments, including the police and fire departments, as well as public works, for their roles in ensuring a safe and enjoyable event. She also recognized the efforts of volunteers, noting that 73 individuals helped on the day of the parade.
The awards were divided into traditional categories and best categories, with notable entries recognized for their creativity and community engagement. The best float overall was awarded to Rule and Rule Realtors for their Barbie-themed entry, while the citizens' choice award went to Quad City Fifties Friends, who brought a nostalgic retro vibe to the parade.
Other winners included Denkman School for best school entry, Grace Church for best church entry, and Blackhawk Bank and Trust for best business entry. The advisory board's choice was awarded to the Refuge Church, and the mayor's cup went to ESA Balloons and More for their festive decorations.
As the parade committee looks forward to next year, which marks the 50th anniversary of the event, Shirk encouraged community members to participate and contribute unique entries to continue the tradition of celebration and unity in Rock Island.
