City of Anacortes wins prestigious housing award

During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around the progress of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the local firefighters' association and the introduction of a proposed code of ethics for council members. Council Member Fantini's initiative aims to broaden the scope of the ethics code to encompass elected officials and appointed individuals, with plans to refine and present it at the council's retreat in early 2025.

Additionally, the council highlighted the upcoming update of the personnel handbook, which has not been revised in several years, indicating a commitment to maintaining current standards and practices.

A notable achievement was celebrated as the city's wastewater treatment plant received the Outstanding Performance Award for 2023 from the Department of Ecology. This award recognizes facilities that meet or exceed effluent water quality standards, with only 118 out of over 300 plants statewide receiving this honor. Brian Walker, the plant manager, credited the dedicated staff for their commitment to maintaining high operational standards.

The meeting also featured the presentation of the Governor's Smart Communities Award to the city of Anacortes for its housing action plan. This plan, adopted in January 2023, aims to address the ongoing housing crisis by promoting the construction of affordable and diverse housing options.
