City plans major redesign to enhance pedestrian safety

In a recent government meeting, officials outlined plans to enhance pedestrian safety and mobility in a rapidly developing study area. The discussions focused on identifying key corridors and intersections that will be prioritized for improvements, with a draft report expected to be completed by the end of the month.

The steering committee, which convened in October, played a crucial role in pinpointing the most critical locations for development. The top three areas identified include 62nd Avenue South between Washington and Belmont, and Washington Street from 57th to the south. The intersection of 62nd and Washington is also a focal point for proposed design options.

The primary goal of the study is to create safer environments for pedestrians, cyclists, and individuals using mobility devices. Officials emphasized the importance of balancing vehicle throughput with pedestrian safety, acknowledging the challenges of managing increased traffic due to anticipated growth in the area.

As the project progresses, the team will share conceptual design options with stakeholders, including the steering committee and planning and zoning committee, to gather further feedback. The initiative aims to ensure that the community can navigate the area safely, particularly for children traveling to school.
