Beaverton Schools Launch New Mariachi Program to Celebrate Culture

In a recent government meeting, board members committed to enhancing support for American Indian and Alaska Native students and families. The board outlined a series of actions aimed at confronting stereotypes and misconceptions while elevating the voices and experiences of Indigenous peoples through professional development initiatives. The goal is to create a curriculum that fosters strong relationships with Indigenous students, native communities, and tribal partners.

During the meeting, board members also reviewed the agenda, with one member requesting the removal of a contract related to the Beaverton High School turf field from the consent agenda for separate discussion. The consent agenda, which typically includes routine business items, was approved unanimously after the requested change.

The meeting featured a community presentation by the South Ridge Mariachi band, marking the first year of the program in Beaverton. Band director Cameron Durie highlighted the importance of elementary music education in the students' development and expressed gratitude for the support from local music teachers. The performance showcased the talents of the students and underscored the program's promising start in the community.
