Del Valle High School construction timeline faces critical delays

In a recent board meeting, officials provided updates on the construction progress of Del Valle High School Number 2, emphasizing the importance of modified permits that have allowed work to continue despite delays. The construction project, which is expected to take 36 months, has faced challenges, including a significant delay in receiving a mass grading permit from the City of Austin, which was only granted on October 2, 2023.

The construction timeline includes two phases: the first phase, focused on site work, was bid in April 2023, while the second phase, covering all other construction aspects, was bid in September 2023. The board discussed the implications of these timelines on the projected opening of the school, with a tentative completion date set for August 2026 for the main academic areas, while athletic and fine arts facilities are expected to be completed by April 2027.

Board members raised concerns about the feasibility of opening the school in August 2026, given that significant construction would still be ongoing. The operational costs for a partial opening were estimated at $2 million for just 450 students, leading to discussions about potentially delaying the opening until the facilities are fully completed in 2027. This would allow for a smoother transition for students and staff, as well as better access to necessary facilities.

Additionally, the board considered the option of enclosing the athletic facility, which would cost an estimated $5 million if included in the current project budget. If not approved now, the cost could rise to between $10 million and $11 million if the project is rebid later.
