Knoxville launches ambitious Vision 0 to end traffic deaths

The Knoxville City Council convened for a workshop focused on the Vision 0 initiative, aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries by the year 2040. The meeting commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a roll call confirming the presence of council members.

Cody Gentry, the newly appointed Vision 0 coordinator, presented the initiative, emphasizing its transformative approach to traffic safety. Gentry, who has nearly 18 years of experience in the city's transportation engineering group, highlighted that Vision 0 is not merely an aspirational goal but a concrete strategy to prioritize safety over speed in urban transportation.

The Vision 0 initiative was unanimously endorsed by the city council in 2021, marking a significant commitment to traffic safety. Gentry noted the importance of political support in achieving such ambitious goals, commending the council for their courage in pursuing this objective. The planning stages of Vision 0 began in 2022, leading to the formation of a steering committee that included various city departments and external agencies, such as the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Knox County Health Department.

In June 2023, the Vision 0 action plan was finalized, outlining specific strategies and actions to enhance road safety in Knoxville. Gentry acknowledged the critical role of community organizations like Bike Walk Knoxville in guiding the initiative and fostering public engagement.

The workshop encouraged council members to engage actively with the presentation, reflecting a collaborative approach to addressing traffic safety in the city. As the Vision 0 initiative progresses, Knoxville aims to set a precedent for urban traffic safety, prioritizing the well-being of its residents on the roads.
