Developers propose transformative solar project in Pinal County

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the proposed Oortown solar project in Pinal County, which aims to convert a previously disturbed mining site into a solar energy facility. Kevin Johnson, the director of development for Avantis, emphasized that the project aligns with the Canal County comprehensive plan, particularly in promoting community well-being, economic sustainability, and healthy living conditions.

The project, which will utilize 1,200 acres of land owned by BHP Copper, is designed to generate 145 megawatts of solar power and includes battery storage. Johnson highlighted that the site is not suitable for residential development due to its historical use and current zoning, making solar energy a more compatible option. He noted that the project has garnered support from local residents and businesses, with 24 letters of endorsement received, including backing from the Samuel Well Fire Department.

During the meeting, concerns regarding the project's environmental impact were addressed. Johnson stated that extensive due diligence studies indicated no significant environmental issues, such as the presence of endangered species or sensitive habitats. Visual simulations were presented to illustrate how the solar arrays would be minimally visible from the town of San Manuel, with existing infrastructure and topography obstructing views.

The meeting concluded with a call for public comments, indicating the next steps in the permitting process. If approved, the project will proceed to further planning and zoning changes in the coming year. The initiative is positioned as a vital step in meeting the growing energy demands of the rapidly expanding county while repurposing a previously disturbed site for sustainable energy production.
