Council pushes for safer routes to schools

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing collaboration between Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) regarding student safety, particularly focusing on safe routes to schools. Council member Kenny expressed gratitude for the involvement of Vision Zero coordinator, Mr. Holland, in expediting assessments related to student transportation safety. The discussion underscored the significance of the MCPS and MCPD partnership in determining safe walking boundaries for students, known as \"walk sheds.\"

Mr. Lewis from MCPS provided insights into the collaborative efforts involving various teams, including the Office of Facilities Management and the Capital Planning team, which utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze and map out safe routes. This collaboration is crucial when new schools are established or when community demographics shift, ensuring that transportation routes are adjusted accordingly.
