City Council Approves Controversial Cedar Street Rezoning Request

In a recent city council meeting, a request to rezone a property at 2408 Cedar Street from a local business district to a medium-density residential district was unanimously approved. The request, made by Charles Klein, aims to convert the long-vacant site, previously used as a hair salon, into a single-family dwelling.

The property, originally platted in 1891 and annexed into the city in 1948, has been unoccupied for at least two years. Klein expressed his intent to sell the property as a home, emphasizing the need for affordable housing in the area. The city’s planning staff noted that while the current comprehensive plan designates the area as commercial, they believe a reevaluation of the zoning could be warranted during the upcoming comprehensive plan update.

During the public hearing, no opposition was voiced, and the Planning Commission had previously recommended approval with a unanimous vote. The council's decision reflects a growing recognition of the need for residential options in the community, despite the existing commercial designation.

The motion to approve the rezoning was supported by all council members present, signaling a collaborative effort to address housing needs in the city. Mayor Claffey concluded the session by wishing Klein success in selling the property.
