Church Permit Sparks Controversy in Downtown Pasco

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered on two significant topics: the housing market in Pasco and a special permit application for a church.

The housing market is currently experiencing high demand, with plans for 17 phases of development anticipated to take between five to seven years to complete. Officials expressed optimism about increasing housing availability in the area, although specific timelines remain tentative.

The meeting also addressed a special permit application for Iglesia Casa de Dios Puerta Cielo, proposed to operate within an existing building at 415 West Columbia Street. The property, located in the central business district and subject to a code case for operating without a permit, is approximately a quarter of an acre and currently houses two commercial tenant spaces.

The application has sparked some controversy, with one public comment received opposing the permit. The letter argued that churches do not contribute to economic development and could increase local costs related to vagrancy and cleanup efforts. Despite this opposition, city staff recommended approval of the permit, provided certain conditions outlined in a recent report are met.

The hearing examiner will issue a written decision within the next ten working days, determining the future of the church's operation in downtown Pasco.
