Utility Company Seeks Approval for Controversial Substation Development

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around a proposed electric substation development on a 2.75-acre site located at the northeast corner of a larger 98.3-acre parcel in Norman. The site, situated north of East Edawatt Road along 72nd Avenue Southeast, is currently surrounded by zoning classified as 2, with one agricultural parcel to the south.

The proposal has sparked significant community interest, evidenced by a protest map indicating that 59.4% of nearby residents have expressed opposition to the development. The meeting featured a presentation from Joe Bridal, representing Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, who outlined the necessity and benefits of the substation. Bridal emphasized that the site was strategically chosen to connect with existing power lines, enhancing electrical capacity in a low-density area that is expected to see growth, particularly with the nearby Norman 2025 development initiative.

Bridal assured attendees that the substation would not require new high-capacity lines and would primarily serve residents of Norman and surrounding communities. He projected a construction timeline of approximately 60 days, aiming for completion by late 2025, contingent on a smooth process.

Concerns raised by local residents included potential traffic increases due to the substation's operation. Bridal responded that, under normal circumstances, the site would generate minimal traffic, estimating only one vehicle visit per month.

The meeting concluded with city officials and the applicant open to further questions, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between the utility company and the community regarding the proposed development.
