Portland moves to honor indigenous leader with street renaming

In a recent government meeting, a resolution was introduced to rename a section of Southwest Jackson Street to Southwest Rose Hill Street, honoring the legacy of Rose Hill, a respected indigenous leader and former student coordinator at Portland State University's Native American Student and Community Center. Commissioner Mapes highlighted the significance of this change, emphasizing that for indigenous students and community members, the renaming represents a meaningful step towards fostering belonging and representation on campus.

The initiative originated when Portland State University approached the city last year with the request. Despite the Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) having paused street renaming applications due to staffing constraints, the unique circumstances surrounding this request prompted the city to consider an exception. The resolution aims to facilitate the processing of the application in accordance with city code.

Deputy City Administrator for Public Works, Priyadhanapal, provided insights into the structured guidelines governing street renaming, as outlined in chapter 17.93 of the city code. He explained that the process requires a formal application to be submitted to the city engineer, ensuring compliance with specific criteria due to the potential impact on residents and businesses.

The meeting underscored the city's commitment to honoring indigenous heritage and enhancing community representation through this proposed change.
