County Board Faces Budget Crisis Amid Controversial Pilot Project

In a recent meeting of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, members voted in favor of a pilot project, despite concerns regarding its potential long-term financial implications for the county. Supervisor Bishnell expressed reservations about the project, highlighting the possibility of increased costs amid an impending budget crisis. While the installation costs will be covered by Shotts Energy and Cal Poly Humboldt, Bishnell cautioned that the overall financial burden could exceed initial estimates.

The board also announced plans to enter closed session to discuss labor negotiations and ongoing litigation involving the county. This includes cases such as John Forrest versus the County of Humboldt and others, which are currently pending in the Humboldt County Superior Court.

During the meeting, a member of the public inquired about the anticipated timing for reconvening after the closed session, to which the board indicated a likely delay, estimating a return around 10:45 AM.

Additionally, Deputy County Administrative Officer Sean Quincy recused himself from discussions related to Measure S, which pertains to cannabis taxation, due to his personal financial interests in the matter. The meeting underscored the board's ongoing efforts to navigate fiscal challenges while addressing community projects and legal matters.
