In a recent announcement, the City Schools of Decatur (CSD) celebrated outstanding academic achievements for the class of 2024, highlighting impressive results from the ACT and preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). According to the Georgia Department of Education, Decatur High School students achieved an average ACT score of 24.6, the highest among 172 public school districts in Georgia. This score reflects a notable increase of 0.9 points from the previous year, solidifying CSD's position as a leader in academic performance statewide.
The ACT, a key standardized test for college admissions, is complemented by the PSAT, which is administered to sophomores and juniors. CSD reported a district average PSAT score of 10.56, surpassing both state and national averages of 9.77 and 9.65, respectively. This score represents a 15-point increase and is significant as the PSAT serves as the sole qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program, unlocking access to over $300 million in scholarship opportunities for students.
Additionally, CSD recognized Tallie Street Elementary and Beacon Hill Middle School for their achievements in literacy and mathematics, respectively. Tallie Street was named a state literacy leader school, while Beacon Hill received accolades as a state math leader school.
The meeting also highlighted the nomination of Ella Harley, a student engagement coach at CSD, for the Hidden Heroes Award by the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement. Ms. Harley is commended for her dedication to supporting vulnerable students and their families, ensuring they have access to necessary resources and assistance. The community is encouraged to vote for her recognition until November 22 at 5 PM, with details available on CSD's social media platforms.
