Maui County moves to legalize food trucks on farms

During a recent government meeting, the ADEPT committee discussed and voted on Resolution 24171, which aims to amend Maui County's regulations regarding mobile food trucks and trailers in agricultural districts. The resolution received unanimous support, passing with four votes in favor and no opposition, while three council members were excused from the vote.

The proposed legislation seeks to redefine agricultural food establishments to include mobile food trucks and trailers, allowing them to operate as accessory uses on working farms. This initiative was prompted by concerns from the agricultural working group, which reported enforcement actions against farmers utilizing food trucks, despite existing codes permitting certain commercial structures on agricultural land.

Sydney Smith, a facilitator for the agricultural working group, presented the bill, highlighting the historical context of the legislation and the challenges faced by local farmers. She noted that while the concept of mobile food establishments was introduced in previous discussions, the lack of explicit allowance in the county code led to confusion and enforcement issues, resulting in the shutdown of several food trucks.

The committee's decision to support the resolution reflects a broader effort to enhance farmers' revenue and adapt local regulations to better accommodate modern agricultural practices. The meeting concluded with a brief recess before moving on to additional agenda items.
