Solar Shade Project Promises Relief and Jobs for Gurnee

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed an upcoming solar project at Six Flags that aims to enhance the parking experience while promoting local employment. The initiative will involve the installation of 40 freestanding solar shade structures, covering approximately 15 acres of the parking lot, which is a fraction of the total area.

The project, spearheaded by a California-based company with prior experience in similar installations, is expected to significantly reduce temperatures for vehicles parked beneath the solar arrays. This improvement is anticipated to enhance visitor comfort and satisfaction at the amusement park.

During the meeting, questions arose regarding the height of the structures. The maximum height was clarified to be 22.1 feet, slightly higher than the initially submitted figure of 20.1 feet. Officials confirmed that the tilt of the solar panels would generally face south, minimizing any potential visual impact on nearby residents, who are shielded by a tree line.

Concerns about glare from the solar panels were addressed, with assurances that the panels are equipped with an anti-glare coating, meeting stringent requirements typically enforced around airports. This project not only promises to benefit park visitors but also represents a significant investment in the local community through job creation.
