Cape Coral resident demands action on manatee protection

In a recent government meeting in Cape Coral, residents voiced their concerns over two significant issues: the removal of a stipend for council members and the ongoing situation surrounding the Chiquita Lock, which has been linked to the deaths of manatees.

One resident, advocating for fiscal responsibility, urged the council to eliminate the stipend before the upcoming Christmas break. He emphasized that any future raises for council members should be determined by the citizens rather than the council itself, suggesting a charter amendment to return this authority to the public.

Another resident, Dennis Costello, shared his extensive involvement in the Chiquita Lock proceedings after learning about its impact on local wildlife. He reported that eight manatees had been killed due to the lock and highlighted the community's response, which included a petition signed by over 1,700 residents calling for its removal. Costello detailed his attendance at hearings and depositions, asserting that the presiding judge, Suzanne Van Wyk, ruled in favor of the city due to a lack of scientific evidence presented by the petitioners. He pointed out that the city has incurred over $2 million in attorney fees related to the case, a cost ultimately borne by taxpayers.

The discussions reflect a growing concern among residents regarding both financial accountability within the council and the environmental implications of local infrastructure decisions.
