Transit ridership surges with new routes in Meridian

Valley Regional Transit (VRT) reported a significant increase in ridership across its routes, particularly in Meridian, during a recent government meeting. Miss Tayson presented an update highlighting that overall ridership has risen, with new services contributing to this growth. Notably, the newly introduced Route 24, which connects the Village to Townsquare Mall, recorded 4,000 riders between June and August 2024.

The data revealed impressive increases in ridership on several routes: a 10% rise on Route 30, an 11% increase on Route 40, a 40% surge on Route 42, and a remarkable 128% boost on Route 45. The enhancements to Route 42 transformed it from a semi-all-day service to an hourly service, while Route 45 now mirrors Route 30, providing 30-minute peak service in Meridian.

Despite the overall positive trends, some concerns were raised regarding the effectiveness of the new routing for Route 42, which showed lower ridership compared to previous metrics. Tayson explained that this could be attributed to a shift in where passengers are boarding the bus, indicating a change in travel patterns rather than a decline in overall usage.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for Tayson to return for further updates as more data becomes available, emphasizing the importance of ongoing analysis to understand the impact of the recent changes in service.
