Education leaders confront alarming achievement gaps post pandemic

In a recent government meeting, officials addressed concerning trends in educational proficiency among students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and minority groups. Data revealed a significant 28-point proficiency gap in English Language Arts (ELA) and a 26-point gap in math between students with IEPs and their peers without. Alarmingly, the gap in math proficiency has widened from 34 points to 43 points over the past year, indicating a decline in performance for students with IEPs since the onset of the pandemic.

The meeting highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to address these disparities across all student subgroups, particularly focusing on the declining proficiency rates among Black and Hispanic students in both ELA and math from 2023 to 2024. Despite ongoing efforts and a high-level strategic plan, officials acknowledged that improvements in academic performance for these groups have been minimal.

Moving forward, the discussion emphasized the importance of utilizing data to establish specific, timed, and measurable academic growth goals to effectively tackle these educational gaps.
