Schenectady honors basketball star with Hall of Fame induction

During a recent meeting of the Schenectady City Council, a resolution was passed to honor James D. Thomas Jr. for his significant contributions to basketball and his community. The resolution highlighted Thomas's impressive athletic career, which began in Schenectady, where he was a standout player on the 1998 Schenectady High School Championship Basketball team. He went on to achieve remarkable success at the University of Texas, becoming one of the school's all-time greats and leading the team to its first Final Four appearance in 56 years.

Following his collegiate career, Thomas was recognized as the National Basketball Development League Rookie of the Year and later played in the NBA for teams including the Portland Trail Blazers and the Atlanta Hawks. His professional journey also took him overseas to compete in Italy, Israel, and Turkey.

Upon returning to Schenectady, Thomas dedicated himself to coaching girls' basketball at Schenectady High School and currently serves as the diversity, equity, and inclusion manager for Schenectady County. The council expressed gratitude for his role as an ambassador for the city and congratulated him on his upcoming induction into the Schenectady School District Athletic Hall of Fame on September 16, 2024.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Thomas is pursuing a PhD in education, with plans to complete his studies by next October. The council's resolution not only celebrates his past accomplishments but also acknowledges his ongoing commitment to education and community service.
