Archaeological findings spark debate over Surfside Crossing project

During a recent meeting of the select board, discussions centered on the archaeological assessments related to the Surfside Crossing project. Board member Matt Fee raised concerns regarding whether any archaeological studies had been conducted at the site. In response, a commission member confirmed that an archaeological study was completed in 2018 by Powell, which found no adverse effects from the project. Despite changes in the project's scope since the study, the area of disturbance remains unchanged, making the 2018 report still relevant.

The commission plans to send the select board documentation regarding the archaeological findings, along with comments from the Historic District Commission (HTC) that were adopted in a recent special meeting. This communication aims to address the inquiries raised during the select board meeting.

Additionally, the Massachusetts Historical Commission announced two upcoming webinars on November 19 and December 9, focusing on historic significance and local preservation practices. The commission encourages participation in these educational opportunities, highlighting their commitment to preserving local heritage.
