Community rallies with over 290000 in donations for schools

During a recent government meeting, a significant focus was placed on community support through donations and grants, highlighting the generosity of local organizations and individuals. A total of $294,659.60 was reported in cash donations and grants for various educational initiatives, including a notable $62,290 grant from the International Rescue Committee aimed at integrating Afghan refugees into local schools.

The meeting detailed numerous contributions, such as $35,100 raised for an all-star costume party fun run at Anthony, with notable donations from Eye Care Associates of Manhattan and D Hart Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Additionally, the Douglas and Patricia Tippen Trust contributed $4,000 for athletic supplies at Eisenhower and Anthony schools. Other donations included $1,000 from Cowboy Running Company for Manhattan High School and $36,100 for the school's orchestra trip to New York.

The consent agenda included the approval of Manhattan High School's wrestling tournament travel plans and a revised policy on nonresident student enrollment. The motion to approve was carried unanimously.

The meeting also featured a report on safety and security, where it was noted that the district was unsuccessful in securing a federal grant for school resource officers, although a state grant had been utilized previously.

In terms of extracurricular activities, various school clubs reported on their recent achievements. The girls' golf team celebrated a state championship, while the Science Olympiad team excelled in national competitions. The HOSA Future Health Professionals Club and the Red Cross Club engaged in community service and educational initiatives, including a tour of Via Christi Hospital.
