Village launches innovative project to enhance pedestrian safety

During a recent government meeting, officials celebrated the achievements of the EZ Rides bike and pedestrian program, which has garnered recognition for its efforts in enhancing community safety. Mike Johnson, the program manager, highlighted the collaborative initiatives undertaken with local police and community members to promote safe walking and biking, particularly for schoolchildren.

The recognition stems from a series of activities conducted between February 2023 and January 2024, including annual crossing guard training and observation reports in five key areas. Notably, the police department played a significant role by facilitating four \"learn to ride\" classes, two bike safety skill sessions, and two community rides, engaging a total of 40 children in bike safety education.

A key highlight of the meeting was the introduction of \"Operation Bright Idea,\" an innovative project aimed at improving pedestrian safety at high-risk intersections identified by the Ridgewood Traffic Safety Bureau. The initiative focuses on enhancing nighttime visibility through the installation of LED lighting in crosswalks, addressing concerns raised by traffic accident data that indicated a higher incidence of vehicle-pedestrian crashes during low-light conditions.

The collaborative efforts of the village, police, and community stakeholders have been met with positive feedback, underscoring a commitment to fostering a safer environment for all residents.
