Council Moves to Acquire Controversial Property Amid Legal Battle

In a recent public hearing, the Princeton municipal council voted to advance Ordinance 2024-35, which authorizes the acquisition of the property located at 101 Walnut Lane. The ordinance allows municipal staff to pursue the property through private sale or, if necessary, through condemnation via eminent domain. This decision comes amid ongoing litigation surrounding the property, although the municipality is not a party to the legal disputes.

The council emphasized that their right to acquire the property remains intact, regardless of the litigation claims. Legal opinions from the state's attorney general have confirmed the municipality's constitutional right to proceed with the acquisition.

During the public comment session, community members expressed their views on the acquisition. Antonio Maroli, a representative of the Westminster Community Orchestra, highlighted the importance of preserving the existing music facilities at the site, arguing that they are a valuable asset to the community. He urged the council to consider the long-term benefits of maintaining these facilities rather than allowing them to deteriorate.

Another resident, Henry Singer, raised concerns about the lack of a clear plan for the property. He called for the council to articulate specific needs or requirements that the acquisition would address, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in such significant financial decisions.

The council acknowledged the community's concerns but noted that the ongoing litigation limits their ability to provide detailed information at this stage. A subsequent public hearing regarding the financing of the acquisition, outlined in Ordinance 2024-34, is scheduled for October 14.
