Historic windows replacement sparks preservation debate

In a recent government meeting, the commission reviewed an application for historic preservation at 36 Bank Street, submitted by applicant Brad Bailey. The proposal involves replacing existing street-facing windows with new wood-clad double-hung windows, while retaining the original window trim and casing. The property is situated in the Bank Street historic district, which mandates preservation plan reviews for any visible changes.

Elizabeth, a commission member, highlighted the importance of maintaining accurate dimensions for the new windows, noting that the proposed changes must comply with the borough's policy allowing a quarter-inch differential in window dimensions. The existing windows are wooden, and the proposed replacements aim to enhance durability and thermal performance.

Benjamin Grace, representing the applicant, explained that the new windows would be installed from the interior, minimizing disruption to the exterior features. He assured the commission that the visible aspects of the building would remain largely unchanged, with the only notable difference being a slight increase in the width of the meeting rail.

The commission expressed a favorable impression of the application, leading to a motion for approval, which was unanimously passed. Following this, the discussion shifted to a second application for 37 Bank Street, where Bailey is also seeking to replace all windows and siding on the property. The commission is expected to review this application in the upcoming sessions.
