Oklahoma City unveils ambitious North Wylie Park project

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the upcoming North Wylie Post Park project, which will feature the USS Oklahoma City Submarine Memorial. The project aims to enhance the park located on the north shore of the Oklahoma River, providing a significant addition to the area.

The park's development has been in the works for an extended period, with funding secured for its various phases. The current phase focuses on the North Shore, which will include a memorial plaza designed to honor the history of the Navy in Oklahoma. The centerpiece of the memorial will be the sail and dive planes from the USS Oklahoma City, which are expected to be transported from Bremerton, Washington, once the submarine's nuclear reactor has cooled—a process anticipated to take three to four years.

In the interim, a replica of the submarine's sail and dive planes will be constructed to ensure the memorial remains visually engaging during the wait for the actual components. The memorial plaza will also feature a granite slab and various amenities, including play areas and spaces for public gatherings and ceremonies, such as Navy Days and Memorial Day events.

The project aims to create a pedestrian-friendly environment, connecting residents and visitors to the park and its memorials. Additionally, the park improvements will include reconfigured parking to enhance accessibility and alleviate congestion, particularly benefiting nearby Scissor Tail Park.
