Eagle Scout transforms local dog park with major upgrades

The recent Lawton City Council meeting highlighted two significant community events and a report on local civic engagement.

First, Lane, a representative from the Cancer Center, reported on the success of a recent community event held on the campus, which attracted a notable turnout of participants. The event featured a 5K run, with routes extending up to 14 miles, and was well-supported by local organizations, including the City of Lawton, Cameron University, and Comanche County Memorial Hospital. Lane shared a heartwarming moment from the event, noting that an 8-year-old girl was the first to cross the finish line in the 5K, completing the race in an impressive 21 minutes. The event was praised for its organization and community spirit, despite the warm weather.

The meeting also recognized Eagle Scout candidate Bryce Mosley, who completed a project benefiting the local dog park. Mosley detailed the improvements made, including the installation of fencing, water spigots, and a gazebo, all accomplished with the help of 66 volunteers and various local donors. The project, which took approximately 538 hours to complete, was well-received by council members, who commended Mosley for his initiative and dedication to enhancing community spaces.

Additionally, the council discussed the deployment of the Lawton Fire Department to Florida in response to Hurricane Milton. Chief of the Fire Department confirmed that the deployment was authorized following a request from Florida's governor, with all associated costs covered by federal assistance. This proactive measure underscores Lawton's commitment to supporting disaster response efforts beyond its borders.

During the audience participation segment, resident Edward Jensen raised concerns about the city's \"I Help Lawton\" reporting system, emphasizing the need for better communication regarding reported issues, particularly those involving street lighting and trash collection. Jensen acknowledged the city's efforts in addressing most concerns but urged for improvements in responsiveness and clarity in the reporting process.
