City Council Approves Major Cost-Saving Construction Changes

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a significant change order related to ongoing construction projects, highlighting two key items that will result in substantial cost savings. The change order proposes eliminating the paving of the parking lot from the current contract and modifying the construction of the concession building from concrete masonry unit (CMU) to timber frame. These adjustments are expected to save approximately $700,000.

While the parking lot will still be constructed, it will be managed under a separate contract to expedite the process and potentially reduce costs. Officials clarified that the original plan for the north parking lot, which included gravel, has been revised to ensure it will be paved according to the initial design. This decision aims to streamline the project timeline and address concerns about the construction schedule.

Additionally, two items were not included in the change order: the potential removal of air conditioning in changing rooms and dressing rooms, which is still under evaluation, and a possible savings related to soil work that will only be confirmed once excavation begins.

Council members expressed concerns about the clarity of the change order details, particularly regarding the parking lot's construction. Officials committed to revisiting these points in the next meeting to ensure all aspects are clearly communicated and understood.
