Community rallies for kindness and support in local schools

In a recent government meeting, various community initiatives and student achievements were highlighted, showcasing the active engagement of local schools and organizations in promoting positivity and support within the community.

The student government has taken the lead in organizing a Toys for Tots campaign, encouraging donations to spread holiday cheer. A successful \"Stuff a Bus\" event at Martin's Cobblestone saw significant community participation, reflecting the generosity of local residents. Additionally, the JROTC contributed by collecting nonperishable food items for a local church committee.

The meeting also celebrated the annual district chess tournament, which attracted 80 participants from multiple schools, including Elkhart High School and Westside. Gavin Ayers emerged as the overall champion, earning a trophy for his school.

A blood drive held at the field house was another highlight, with 124 donors contributing to the collection of 81 units of blood, potentially saving 243 lives. The speech and debate team achieved a commendable fifth place in a recent competition, while the Science Olympiad team participated in their first competition of the season.

In recognition of individual accomplishments, Angi Mehta was named the commencement speaker for 2025 and achieved a perfect score on the SAT reading and writing section. Upcoming events include a Madrigal performance, winter concerts, and a gymnastics invitational.

The meeting also acknowledged the success of various sports teams, including the freshman basketball team and the Shearer team, which will compete nationally in Florida. The Dungeons and Dragons club has seen a surge in popularity, with 90 attendees at recent meetings, and the Dance Marathon is gearing up to raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network.

In addition to these activities, Erin from the community reported on the Parent University event, which provided educational resources for families, and recognized Hope, a student from Mary Feizer Elementary, as one of the \"Kindest Kids in America\" for her compassionate actions towards classmates.

Beardsley Elementary hosted a Loteria Night, blending cultural education with family fun, while Pierre Moran Middle School received the Gold Star Award for its counseling program, and Tim Adams was named School Counselor of the Year.

These initiatives and recognitions reflect a vibrant community spirit and a commitment to fostering a supportive environment for students and families alike.
