City approves $262000 for crucial traffic safety upgrades

In a recent government meeting, the mayor sought approval for the appropriation of $262,000 from the newly proposed Prospect Street traffic condition stabilization fund. This funding is intended to address specific traffic safety issues related to the Union Square master development, particularly concerning bus traffic on the D2 parcel, which is currently the largest construction site in the area.

Director Ignacio clarified that the funds would be allocated for traffic signalization improvements, specifically aimed at enhancing bus safety through transit signal priority overrides. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public transit service in the city, with the expectation that better infrastructure will lead to increased bus usage.

The council discussed the necessity of these funds in relation to a specific condition from the planning board, identified as condition 37. This condition mandates improvements to an existing MBTA bus stop along the D2 parcel's frontage, ensuring accessibility and comfort for users. The council emphasized the importance of these improvements, particularly given the commercial and residential interests in the area.

Additionally, the meeting addressed a proposed easement agreement with the MBTA for a pedestrian bridge over the tracks in the Inner Belt and Brick Bottom areas. This bridge aims to enhance safety for pedestrians, as the MBTA expressed concerns over at-grade crossings due to the lack of pedestrian-activated signals. The easement is a prerequisite for the planned connection, which has been in development for over a year.

The council plans to recommend approval for both the traffic stabilization fund and the easement agreement, highlighting their commitment to improving transit safety and accessibility in the community.
