City plans advanced AI system to tackle traffic delays

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant improvements planned for the Washington Road corridor, one of the area's busiest routes. The corridor experiences considerable delays during morning and evening peak hours, prompting staff to engage with Rhythm, a technology provider, to implement advanced traffic management systems.

The proposed enhancements include 14 travel time detection units and six AI detection systems, designed to monitor and analyze vehicle flow from signal to signal. This technology aims to provide real-time data, allowing for precise identification of traffic issues and enabling the system to adapt dynamically to changing conditions. The total cost for these modules and their implementation is estimated at $127,150, which will be funded from the 17/22 budget. The proposal received unanimous support from the board.

Additionally, the meeting addressed a change order for the Clarycut Road Old Union Realignment Project, which is part of the TIA 2 initiative. The board previously approved a contract with POND and Company to develop a baseline conceptual design for this corridor. With the alignment now established, officials are prepared to proceed with environmental studies and traffic assessments, ensuring that the project can move forward effectively.
