Joliet kicks off holiday season with festive tree lighting

The 26th annual Light Up the Holidays parade in Joliet kicked off with excitement and community spirit, despite ongoing construction altering the traditional route. Hosted by Natalie Manley and Mary Lancaster, the event drew a large crowd eager to celebrate the season.

Priscilla Cordero, executive director of the Joliet City Center Partnership, welcomed attendees and introduced Uxmark Torres, the city's poet laureate, who recited an original poem reflecting on gratitude and community during the holiday season. Cordero acknowledged the event's sponsors, including the University of Saint Francis, which has supported the parade for 26 years, and highlighted the importance of local businesses during the construction period.

A new downtown loyalty program was announced, encouraging residents to support local businesses with discounts and prizes. Additionally, the winners of a holiday storefront decorating contest were revealed, with Black Cat Curiosities taking first place.

As the evening progressed, USF President Dr. Arvid Johnson expressed the university's commitment to the community, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. The highlight of the night was the tree lighting ceremony, led by Mayor Terry Darcy and assisted by local children. The event concluded with a countdown, culminating in the illumination of the Christmas tree, symbolizing hope and joy for the holiday season.
