Zoning Board Considers Controversial Extension for Home Addition

In a recent meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals, Edward Musto requested a six-month extension for a variance originally granted in September 2023, which allows for the conversion of a single-family residence into a two-family dwelling at 241 Pleasant Street. The extension is sought due to financial setbacks that delayed the project, including the recent sale of a property in Westwood.

Musto explained that he plans to begin construction soon, having recently secured the necessary funds. However, board members expressed skepticism about the need for a full six months, given that plans for the project are expected to be finalized within two weeks. Concerns were raised regarding Musto's previous compliance with zoning requirements, particularly from neighboring resident Nancy Cotopatch, who cited unsatisfactory work on a fence and unauthorized use of her electricity by Musto's contractor.

The board noted that this request follows a history of delays, as the original variance had lapsed without any work being initiated. Members emphasized the importance of adhering to the timeline set forth in the zoning regulations, with some suggesting a shorter extension period to ensure accountability.
