District struggles with alarming attendance rates

In a recent meeting, officials from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) discussed the critical importance of student attendance in meeting state educational standards. DESE mandates that at least 90% of students must attend school 90% of the time for districts to achieve satisfactory performance ratings.

The attendance calculation method was outlined, which involves dividing the hours of attendance by total enrolled hours, then multiplying by 100. The results determine the points a district can earn based on attendance percentages. A proportional attendance rate below 79.9% results in zero points, while achieving 80% earns 2 points, 85% earns 3 points, and reaching the target of 90% or above nets the district 4 points.

Currently, the district's overall proportional attendance rate stands at 60.58%, a notable increase from last year's rate of 49.5%. However, this figure still places the district below the required threshold. The report highlighted that several schools are struggling, with Moline Elementary at 82.25%, just above the approaching mark, while others like Success Academy are significantly lower, with only 14.68% of students attending 90% of the time.

The meeting emphasized the need for continued efforts to improve attendance across the district, with particular focus on schools currently performing below standards. As the district works towards enhancing student attendance, officials are optimistic about the potential for improvement in the upcoming quarters.
