Infrastructure overhaul planned with $2 billion budget boost

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed a substantial $2.2 billion budget aimed at enhancing infrastructure in Cleveland and Claiborne Counties. Key topics included the urgent need for recovery funding to support ongoing and future projects, particularly the Highway 61 bypass, which is projected to cost over $160 million.

Officials highlighted the significant investments made over the past five years, totaling more than $12 million on various paving projects within Cleveland County, including improvements to several highways. Additionally, they outlined plans for approximately $5 billion worth of projects in Claiborne County, which will focus on critical infrastructure upgrades, including bridge replacements and road enhancements.

The meeting also addressed the importance of Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grants, which facilitate community projects such as sidewalks and lighting. Recent grants awarded to Alcorn State University for sidewalk and trail development were noted as successful examples of these initiatives.

A contract has been awarded to engineering firm Neil Schaeffer, in partnership with minority firm SAW, to begin preliminary work on the Highway 61 bypass project. This initial phase will involve design and surveying to assess housing and cemetery impacts in the area. Officials expressed optimism that the project will progress over the next two to two and a half years, emphasizing the need for patience as the planning and execution phases unfold.
