New campus aims to empower adults with disabilities

In a recent government meeting, the commission approved a development proposal for Icon Homes LLC, which aims to construct period-correct single-family homes in a neighborhood currently undergoing revitalization. The project, presented by Nick Tucker of Tucker Land Surveying, will feature hardy board siding and architectural shingles, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the area. Each home will range from 1,800 to 2,000 square feet, with the intention of matching the existing neighborhood's facade.

The commission clarified that the proposal did not require any variances, as the lots were within acceptable limits for the R3 zoning requirements. Following a brief discussion, a motion to approve the project was passed with a vote of 6-3.

Additionally, the commission reviewed a rezoning request for the former Miss Selma School Campus, which aims to transform the site into an on-campus facility for individuals with developmental disabilities. The proposed Access Village will include up to 34 residential units, ranging from 450 to 1,500 square feet, along with recreational and dining facilities. Staff expressed strong support for the project, highlighting its potential to provide inclusive living solutions for adults with disabilities. The proposal is set to foster community engagement and independence for its residents.

The meeting concluded with the commission moving forward with the necessary approvals for both developments, marking a significant step towards enhancing local housing options and community support services.
