Neighbors rally against proposed dual home development

In a recent government meeting, a proposal to rezone a property from R3 to PDR for a single-family residential development was discussed. The applicant aims to subdivide the existing lot, measuring 66 and two-thirds by 140 feet, into two smaller lots, each measuring 33 and a third by 140 feet. Plans include constructing a single-family home on each lot, with driveways and parking accessible from the alley. The proposed homes will feature vinyl siding, a brick base, and asphalt shingles.

City staff expressed support for the application, indicating there are no outstanding issues and recommending approval, contingent upon compliance with specific conditions outlined in the staff report.

However, the proposal faced opposition from local resident L. Daniel Eaton, who lives adjacent to the property. Eaton voiced concerns about the impact of adding two homes on the lot, emphasizing the character of the neighborhood, which features older homes, including his own, which is 124 years old. He stated that most neighbors he spoke with oppose the development, fearing it would disrupt the aesthetic and spaciousness of the area.

Eaton highlighted that the existing house on the lot has been condemned and is set to be demolished, raising questions about the suitability of the lot for two homes. The commission is expected to weigh the community's concerns against the applicant's proposal in their decision-making process.
