Officials push to halt controversial road widening project

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed key items including a corrective action plan for the 2024 audit and the potential removal of the Gilead Road widening project from the state transportation improvement plan (STIP).

The meeting commenced with the approval of a corrective action plan aimed at addressing audit items. The board unanimously voted in favor of the plan, which was deemed necessary despite the organization receiving an unmodified opinion in its audit.

Following this, the focus shifted to the Gilead Road widening project. A representative presented a resolution to remove the project from the STIP, citing conflicts with the adopted downtown plan, which discourages road widening. The project, originally intended to alleviate congestion, would require the demolition of several buildings, including parts of local businesses.

Commissioner Hunt raised concerns about the potential loss of buildings and inquired about alternative traffic solutions. In response, officials mentioned that a consultant has been hired to explore the feasibility of constructing a roundabout at the problematic intersection, which could serve as a viable alternative to the widening project.

Further discussions included the need for data on traffic patterns following the construction of two new roundabouts nearby. Officials acknowledged that a post-construction traffic study had not yet been conducted but agreed it would be beneficial to assess the impact on traffic flow.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to move forward with the resolution to remove the Gilead Road project from the STIP, pending further analysis of traffic management strategies.
