Flooding Displaces Dozens as Emergency Response Mobilizes

Recent flooding along the Tuckasegee River has caused significant disruptions in the area, impacting several campgrounds and displacing approximately 45 to 48 individuals. The affected sites include Ela Campground, Country Girl RV Park, Grumpy Bears, and Bear Hunter Campground.

Local authorities reported that multiple roads, including Old River Road and parts of High Creek, were also flooded. Currently, three campers have been confirmed as completely destroyed, with the potential for that number to increase pending further damage assessments.

Building inspections and environmental health officials are conducting evaluations at Ela Campground to determine if utilities can be restored, which may allow some displaced individuals to return to their campers. In the meantime, 13 people have been accommodated in motels after a temporary shelter was opened from Thursday to Sunday, initially housing four individuals before additional needs arose.

Communication issues have compounded the situation, with disruptions in cell phone service leading to the transfer of 911 calls to Harnett County. Emergency services have been maintained at local fire stations and rescue squad buildings, which are staffed around the clock to assist those in need.

To support the displaced residents, a donation center has been established at the Family Resource Center, encouraging community contributions to aid those affected by the flooding. Local officials expressed gratitude for the efforts of emergency responders and the community during this challenging time.
