Land use request aims to preserve ancient Hawaiian traditions

During a recent government meeting, representatives from a local sailing association presented a proposal for a land use permit in southern Maui. The association, which has been active for 37 years, seeks to establish a dedicated base for training and teaching traditional skills to beneficiaries of the Ma'kainana and Kanaka Ma'ole communities.

The proposed site, located approximately 60 feet from beachfront owned by the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), aims to serve as a hub for educational activities focused on ancient practices. The association emphasized the importance of reviving these skills for cultural preservation and community engagement.

In their proposal, the representatives outlined plans for a small canoe hale and storage containers for equipment and supplies. They expressed a vision that encompasses not only conservation efforts but also agricultural initiatives. The association is requesting a 45-year lease with an option to renew, hoping that the commissioners will grant them the necessary permissions to proceed with their plans.
