Young leader shines at Girls State and Girls Nation

During a recent government meeting, Nirjara Kolleg, a member of the speech and debate team, shared her inspiring experiences from attending Massachusetts Girls State and Girls Nation. Kolleg was elected as the Massachusetts Secretary of State during her week-long immersion in government and advocacy, which aims to empower young women to become future leaders.

At Girls State, Kolleg participated in mock elections and engaged in discussions about significant legislative issues, including proposals for free feminine hygiene products and financial literacy in schools. Her ability to communicate effectively and her passion for public speaking were pivotal in her success, culminating in her selection as one of twelve representatives to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. There, she had the opportunity to meet with influential leaders, including the President.

The meeting highlighted the importance of fostering civic engagement among youth, with committee members expressing admiration for Kolleg's confidence and commitment to public service. Kolleg indicated her interest in pursuing a political career in the future, emphasizing the value of gaining diverse experiences before fully committing to public office.

The event underscored the critical role of programs like Girls State in nurturing the next generation of leaders and the necessity of supporting young women in their aspirations to engage in government and advocacy. The American Legion Auxiliary funded Kolleg's participation, reinforcing their mission to empower young women without financial barriers.
