Residents outraged by skyrocketing sewer rate hikes

Residents of the Reese Creek Lagoon community voiced their concerns over significant increases in sewage service fees during a recent government meeting. A homeowner, who has lived in the area for 17 years, highlighted a dramatic rise in monthly sewer charges since Great River acquired the sewage system in July 2021. The monthly fee escalated from $15 to $39.80 in May 2023, and has now reached $66.50, a stark contrast to the average water bill of $30.50 and a quarterly garbage fee of $68.52.

The resident expressed frustration over the disproportionate costs, suggesting that a fair rate for sewer service would be around $35 per month. They urged officials to reconsider the current pricing, which they deemed unreasonable.

Following this, Dr. Randy Green, president of the White Cypress Lake Property Owners Association (POA), addressed the assembly, representing 68 property owners and an additional 250 in Hancock County. He noted that approximately 20% of their members rely on well water, with more expressing interest in switching to this option.

The discussions reflect growing concerns among residents regarding utility costs and the need for equitable pricing structures in the community.
