District launches mental health initiative to combat student self harm

During a recent government meeting, Dustin highlighted the importance of collaboration within the district's educational framework. He explained that the district employs a multi-tiered system of support, which includes various teams working together to enhance learning. On October 24, a K-12 math vertical team will convene with consultants to refine the district's vision for math education. This initiative aims to establish best practices for teaching math across all grade levels, from kindergarten to advanced high school courses.

Dustin also discussed the district's commitment to mental health support. A district-wide mental health team is focusing on improving student well-being, particularly through a school improvement goal centered on belonging. Recently, the team met with representatives from Corwell Health, which has received a grant to provide free suicide prevention training for schools. Several schools have already participated in this training, addressing the critical issue of self-harm among students.

The training program is set to evolve over the next three years, starting with mental health providers and expanding to include more staff members. This initiative aims to ensure that educators are well-equipped to support students facing mental health challenges.

Additionally, the district conducted a survey to assess students' feelings of belonging at school. The results showed a positive trend, with a 5% increase in students from grades 3 to 12 reporting that they feel they belong, rising from 65% to 70%. This data reflects the ongoing efforts to create a supportive and inclusive school environment.
