Archaeological dig uncovers historic treasures beneath grocery store

In the heart of Santa Fe, city officials gathered to discuss the ongoing archaeological work at a site undergoing significant redevelopment. The meeting, held on December 6, 2024, provided an update on the extensive excavation and demolition efforts that began in early September.

The project, which involves the demolition of an old grocery store, has revealed a complex stratigraphy beneath the surface. As the demolition progressed, crews encountered deep footings that required removal, leading to large excavations around the site. These trenches, some reaching depths of up to 10 feet, have uncovered six distinct stratigraphic units, including layers of historic trash and remnants from buildings dating back to the early 20th century.

One of the most intriguing discoveries was a massive deposit of silty clay filled with historic artifacts, including butchered bones and other remnants from the mid-1800s. This layer, primarily located on the eastern half of the property, suggests a rich historical context that may have been filled in during the late 1800s. Below this layer, the excavation revealed sterile silty clay and evidence of an ancient channel, hinting at a complex geological history.

As the team continues to excavate, they are also employing ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to map out the site further. Initial results indicate the presence of structures beneath the surface, including potential walls and partitions, which could provide insights into the historical use of the area.

Despite the excitement surrounding these findings, the team has not encountered any human remains or artifacts that would raise concerns about ancestral connections. The focus remains on documenting and preserving the historical context of the site as they prepare for the next phase of excavation.
