City unveils ambitious new mobility and trail plan

The Pflugerville City Council held a significant meeting on December 2, 2024, focusing on the Planning and Zoning Commission's proposed updates to the city's roadway and trail plans. The discussions highlighted the need for improved connectivity and mobility within the community, particularly on the east side of Pflugerville.

City planners presented a detailed classification of road types, including arterials, collectors, and local roads. Arterials, marked in red on the proposed map, are designed for high-speed travel with fewer access points. Collectors, shown in orange and blue, serve as a middle ground, balancing mobility and access. The plan introduces new classifications, such as low-speed vehicle (LSV) routes, which will accommodate smaller vehicles like golf carts and bicycles in areas where full-scale roads are impractical.

One of the key proposals is the addition of nearly 200 miles of new roadways, particularly major collectors on the east side, to enhance traffic flow and accessibility. The plan aims to create a more interconnected grid, allowing for multiple travel options and reducing congestion in residential areas.

The meeting also addressed the city's trail system, which is being updated to include three types of trails: spines, loops, and arms. Spines will serve as major routes, while loops connect these spines to smaller destinations. The council emphasized the importance of integrating the trail system with neighboring cities, ensuring a cohesive network for residents.

Public feedback played a crucial role in shaping these plans, with community members expressing excitement about proposed connections and improvements. The council plans to continue engaging with residents and neighboring jurisdictions to finalize the roadway and trail plans.

Looking ahead, the city will meet with the Texas Department of Transportation and Travis County to discuss shared responsibilities and coordinate efforts. A final plan is expected to be presented to the council in early February 2025, with updates to roadway impact fees also on the agenda. The proposed changes aim to enhance mobility, safety, and accessibility for all Pflugerville residents.
